After we left Kolmanskop our accommodation for the night was an hour’s drive away on a good tarmac road with hardly any traffic and a mountain range in front of us. 
I knew that we would be passing through an area where wild horses roam. There are various theories as to how they came to be there. One is that a ship ran aground in the nearby town of Luderitz and the horses swam to safety. Another is that a landowner died and his wife couldn’t look after them so she released them, and the third is that they were used in world war one, and set free afterwards.
We were lucky enough to see them not too far from the road, so we pulled over to photograph them from a distance. We couldn’t believe it when the stallion slowly approached us, followed by a few others. I hear that they are struggling due to drought in recent years, but considering there is hardly anything to eat here, they are in remarkably good shape and we spent about 30 minutes with them before they crossed the road and went on their way.
Our home for the night was a bit of a treat after a night at a backpackers lodge and another in an igloo!
