The Greek island of Crete.

In a bid to escape the awful English weather I picked up a great deal for a week away in Crete, flying from my local airport 15 minutes away from home.  We had 7 days of blue skies, sunshine and only a sprinkling of rain for just a few minutes.  We hired a car and explored as much as we could.

I liked the dappled sunlight on the wall, and the intrigue of what was through the open door.

The local man playing his guitar had no objection to having his photograph taken.

One day we found a monastery in the countryside which was open to visitors for a fee of just €3.  The grounds were absolutely beautiful with potted plants everywhere and terracotta and warm coloured walls.  There weren’t many tourists there, but everyone was walking around quietly and there was a sense of real calm and peacefulness.

April is certainly a great time to see all the wild flowers in Crete.

Lots of beautiful blue sea too, with patches of turquoise.

I can’t find information on how much water could be stored here, but this gives an indication of the size, as this shows just one third of it.

Roadblock, Cretan style. Everywhere we went we could hear the tinkling of bells around the necks of goats and sheep.

Below are photos taken in sleepy villages that we just found when driving around.  It was easy to stop and wander around tiny streets with hardly another soul around.

Every hamlet seems to have at least half a dozen little churches and I don’t understand why there are so many churches, yet so few people living there.

Outside somebody’s home. I liked the bucket full of lemons and all the pots & pans hanging on the wall.
